Hummingbirds &
The Amazon

Behind the Cause

The Amazon Rainforest—one of the most biodiverse spots on earth—is home to over 1,500 bird species. For the hummingbird, the forests of Colombia are key habitat to over 150 species. When the forest is healthy, these unique creatures flourish too.

THE AMAZON SUSTAINS LIFE EVERYWHERE…BUT IT’S VANISHING FAST

The Amazon is the mightiest of the Earth’s rainforests—encompassing over 6 million square miles across 9 countries. Its soaring trees contribute more than 20% of the world’s oxygen, store massive amounts of carbon, and help stabilize climate and rainfall as far away as the U.S. and China. The forest also harbors a quarter of the world’s flora and fauna, and many of its medicines.

But the Amazon is under siege. It’s on fire. Enormous swaths are being wiped away—exploited for its oil, minerals, and timber; for ranching and farming—and with it, generations of accumulated wisdom about the unique mysteries of the forest.

THAT’S WHY WE’VE PARTNERED WITH THE AMAZON CONSERVATION TEAM

To survive and thrive, we believe that these ancient forests are best governed by their original guardians—and in particular, their women leaders, the knowledge-keepers who are their people’s most passionate advocates. That’s why we’ve partnered with the Amazon Conservation Team, who work with indigenous and local communities across the region to protect tropical forests and strengthen traditional culture.

Chantecaille is proud to support ACT’s efforts on behalf of ASOMI, a group of indigenous female elders and healers living in the Andes Amazon along the Colombia – Ecuador border region, and their campaign to legally purchase a privately held forested area to protect its flourishing long into the future.

Each Lip Chic helps indigenous women protect the spectacular biodiversity of the Andean Amazon, one acre at a time.
